Preferential parking permits for certain neighborhoods?

From the WTA but it affects our little 'ole Kensington:
We've been in contact recently with Community Board 7, with members of a committee pushing residential parking permits for Downtown Bklyn, and by a local elected official's office about residential parking permits and two upcoming meetings. I've also looked into some of the history of it online. Community leaders from the neighborhoods of northwest Bklyn (from Bklyn Heights to Park Slope) have apparently joined forces to push for permits for their neighborhoods, something which some of us are concerned will have a negative impact on Windsor Terrace and Kensington.
These groups are campaigning quite aggressively and we hope we can do as much as we can to keep our neighborhoods from becoming even more of a parking lot than they already are. Just because the plan focusses on conditions in Downtown Brooklyn doesn't mean that there won't be a real, noticeable affect in our neighborhood if preferential parking is made available to everyone from Brooklyn Heights to Park Slope. How these permits would work has not been fully determined. For a description of several possible scenarios, you can go to the following Dept. of Transportation link, starting at page 5:

WTA announces Parking Forum

From WT Alliance:
There has been a movement in some parts of Brooklyn west of Windsor Terrace (like Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights, and similar neighborhoods.) to push for residential parking permits for their neighborhoods. Unfortunately, these neighborhoods are more vocal than Kensington and Windsor Terrace and as a result, there is growing concern that these Park Slope, etc. neighborhoods might get such permits. The potential affect of this is it could turn Kensington and Windsor Terrace into parking lots. This would especially apply to anyone living near a subway stop or an express bus. We already have a big "park and ride" problem in Windsor Terrace and residents of Kensington tell horror stories of looking for a parking spot there.
There is a forum coming up on Feb. 4 on residential parking which is being supported by groups from the neighborhoods who are pushing for such permits, as well as several elected officials, at least one of whom has openly advocated for permits for his neighborhoods. The Commissioner of the NYC Dept. of Transportation is also scheduled to attend.
We wanted to get the word out to people in Kensington to come to this meeting if they have an opinion on this issue. It seems that other people are making decisions for residents of Kensington and Windsor Terrace and these decisions may not be the best for us. Please pass this info on to people you know.

Ticket Blitz?

What is typically considered a courtesy seems to have some meter maids pulling out their ticket pads. We heard an account of some Monday and Tuesday (our local alternate side days) double park'ers getting ticketed. We've also noticed more vehicles in the area with tickets. Just a little heads up. If that registration is expired you may want to hurry up and renew.

Alternate-side Complaints

Ok so we didn't take this picture within the borders of Kensington but found it a little shocking all the same. The note read "How nice for you that you didn't get a ticket. How sad for us that the street remains uncleaned where you stayed parked". Can't this handicapped person get out w the rest of the double parkers at 7.55am and move their car across the street for a little cleaning? Gosh! (We wonder if the person who wrote the note would have felt better if this person had gotten a ticket...)

Speaking of double parking on alternate side days... With the exception of the Ocean Pkwy service road its a common occurrence for cars to just move across the street and double park for the two hours of street cleaning. The problem comes when one of the legal parkers needs to get out. This is something we struggled with years ago when we were in another borough (and before cell phones) so although people left notes we would find ourselves trekking back home to ring them or looking for thier apt. to buzz them. Now that most everyone has a cell phone you'd think this double parking thing would be a whole lot easier. But oh no! It seems people aren't leaving notes with a number or an address at all and lots of legal parkers are getting blocked in! This problem is becoming so rampant in the hood its been brought to the attention of the 66. Leave notes in your windows with your cell phone number if you double park! It's just common courtesy.
