Visit the Living Torah Museum in Kensington

For those who are steeped in the study of the Bible (Torah) the Living Torah Museum brings to life objects which are mentioned but are often difficult to imagine due to the immense amount of time which has elapsed since the events described in the Bible took place.

On exhibit are many authentic ancient artifacts from the Biblical period; there are also items which are mentioned in later works from Jewish history, such as the Mishnah and the Talmud. There is also a display of the 39 special categories of activities which are prohibited on the Sabbath, illustrated in a way to make them easier to understand, with an explanation of how they were performed in ancient Israel at the time of the wandering in the desert of Sinai and the conquest of the land of Israel.

An additional exhibit depicts several of the leaders throughout Jewish history who have made an impact on the Jewish people felt even to the present day.

Kashruth Class at Shaare Torah

Kashruth class at the local Shaare Torah Jewish Center.
Rabbi Segal has been putting together topics for some time so expect some great information along with interesting discussions. There will be four sessions on the following Thursdays beginning at 8PM: January 3, 10, 24, and 31.
Kashruth: Fad Diet, Asceticism, Elitism, or ....?
Topics will include: 1) Why and How do Jews keep Kosher? 2) Can I keep a Kosher home without keeping a Kosher stomach?----Maintaining our Kosher standards while eating out. 3) Eco-Kashruth, Fad or Obligation? 4) Which foods require Rabbinic certification?

Shaare Torah

Shaare Torah Jewish Center on the corner of East 5th and Church Ave is experiencing a bit of a resurgence with the influx of many new familys and a new Rabbi. We attend the ANA meetings in the meeting space and always find it a comfy and warm place. Recently, we got the following:
There is a new rabbi at the Flatbush Jewish Center located on East 5th Street & Church Avenue, Rabbi Shlomo Segal. I have spoken to him about having a group class/meet up/gathering on a weekly basis (for an hour or so) to discuss various topic of basic Jewish law or whatever other discussions might come up. For example, my wife & I would like to know how to make a home Kosher according to rabbinical law so this might be what the first topic. Rabbi Segal is in his early 30's, from Brooklyn and lives right here in Kensington with his lovely wife and adorable baby girl. He is bringing new life to the Jewish Center and this is a great opportunity for you to meet him, if you haven't already done so.
